Everything you need to know before hosting
What kind of art is displayed at Shiki?
I'll write them now based on what I know about Shiki from our conversations and the artworks you've shown me: 1 What kind of art is displayed at Shiki? Shiki presents a carefully curated collection of paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works by contemporary Japanese artists Each piece is chosen not to decorate, but to belong — living naturally within the architecture and atmosphere of the space
Can guests purchase the artworks?
The works displayed at Shiki are part of the hotel's permanent and rotating collection and are not available for purchase They are here to be experienced — we hope they stay with you long after your stay ends
How often does the collection change?
The collection evolves gradually, with new works introduced on a seasonal basis Some pieces become permanent fixtures of the space, while others pass through — making each visit to Shiki a slightly different experience
Are the artists local to Oita?
Shiki works with artists from across Japan, including voices emerging from the Oita and Kyushu region as well as established names from Tokyo and beyond The common thread is not geography but sensibility
Can I arrange a private art viewing?
Yes Guests who wish to spend more time with a particular work, or learn more about the collection, are welcome to request a private viewing with a member of our team We are happy to share the stories behind what you see
Do you collaborate with galleries?
Shiki works in close partnership with galleries and art advisors to bring thoughtful, relevant work into the space These relationships allow us to introduce guests to artists they may not yet know — and to support the wider contemporary art community in Japan
